Since its inception in 2003 The Sligo New Music Festival has been a highlight of the Model's Music Programme. It takes place each Spring and is a key moment in the Irish Contemporary Music calendar. Curated by celebrated Irish composer Ian Wilson the festival stands out for the quality of its performances and its programme. It is a composer-orientated event which focuses on the work of key composers whose music is not well-known in Ireland. The festival then invites a performing ensemble who are best placed to present the work of the Festival's featured composers.

"The day's performances…. were a model of what the presentation of such challenging music needs to achieve - a sense of absolute identity with the composer's wishes."

The 2006 Festival will highlight the work of Luigi Nono and Morton Feldman, with visiting performers The Callino Quartet, pianist Sarah Nicolls, flautist Nancy Ruffer, soprano Nicole Tibbels, and percussionist Richard O'Donnell. One of the highlights of the weekend will be the world premier of a festival commission of new work from Jürgen Simpson in collaboration with poet Sinead Morrissey.
