The closure of The Model for re-development in December 2007 has presented the education programme with a unique set of circumstances - without a building how do we engage the public in a programme of activities and events. The redevelopment has given us an opportunity to really bring art out onto the streets of Sligo.  The occupation of a premises on Wolfetone Street, a former pharmacy has been a key venue for education projects, gigs and workshops during 2009.  The site has been the venue for a number of education programmes and has also doubled as an artist studio

Young Model and artist Artist Andy have shared the studio space aptly named Wolf on Arm since Spring this year.  See what they have been up to over the summer by clicking the following links. YM Blog archive / Young Model Diarys

Children from the Cranmore Regeneration Project were also working in The ‘Wolf on Arm’ over the summer. Their Big Art Project will be on diplay on the hoarding around the perimeter of The Model re-development site and a video of the process will be screened in Cranmore as part of Culture Night Sligo.

The Film for school programme this autumn will be screened in the Gaiety Cinema Sligo in association with The Irish Film Institute.  Click here to see our programme and for booking details.

Amongst other education initiatives, this autumn will also focus on our primary and secondary schools programme, inviting schools to respond through a series of collage parties to the exhibition Reverse Pedagogy at The Model Satellite.

With the Reopening of The Model in March 2010, there will be a large and unique reopening programme entitled DORM.  As part of this project, The Model will collaborate with the School of Product Design at the Institute of Technology Sligo in the creation of a series of temporary sleeping quarters.

Touch the Sky performance group will look to the exhibition Reverse Pedagogy as a springboard for fresh ideas and new directions.  In 2010 Touch the Sky performance group will partner with Stravaganza on a major cross-border initiative.

The Model is committed to the professional development of those working in the gallery education field.  This includes presenting at peer led workshops and conferences, offering professional development workshops to artist educators working on its education programme and the development of PACE, the Partnership for the Arts through Creative Engagement, which can be accessed at www.artspace.ie/about
