Craic in the Box Review

SLIGO HOSTS SPAIN !

You would be forgiven for thinking we have decided to take on the world of International soccer !  The ‘ Spain ’ in question is one of Ireland ’s best young comedians.  Karl Spain will be MC John Colleary’s Craic in the Box guest at The Model Arts and Niland Gallery on Friday 11th February.  Spain ’s return to Sligo is a welcome one .  Last January, his hilarious show had the Black Box audience eating out of the palm of his hand !

Limerick-born Karl has been doing stand up comedy for just over four years and first came to attention by winning RTE’s New comedian for the year 2000, followed by Ireland’s most promising comedian in the Hot Press Annual for 2001 and more recently was a finalist in the BBC’s New comedy awards in 2002.

Describing himself as an “avid synchronised swimmer” and a huge Marty Whelan fan, Karl got interested in performing on stage through his TV production diploma course in Coláiste Dhulaigh in Dublin .

In 2003 he started appearing regularly on TV as ‘Fitzie’ on ‘Xit File’, a character he wrote and performed himself.  That same year he was chosen as one of the Irish acts at the Montreal Just for Laughs festival.

In 2004, Spain toured Australia and Canada and appeared at festivals in Kilkenny and Edinburgh, where his solo debut “ Spain , Ireland and beyond”, was very well received.

Other TV credits include The Late Late Show, The Dunphy Show, The Liffey Laughs, The Fame Game and All Kinds of Everything.  He was also in the audience when his brother Gary was a contestant on Where in the World !

In his short career, he has achieved an awful lot.
