For you, only you:
A project
by Sonia Boyce
1-16
November

The Model Arts and Niland Gallery is delighted to present an
interdisciplinary art project from UK artist Sonia Boyce. The
project, which encompasses visual art and music, is part of the
Model’s 2008 off-site programme, and will take place in
different locations around Sligo town and county. A three-screen
film installation will be shown in Castle
House on Castle Street from November 1-15, while related
live choral performances will take place in Drumcliffe Church,
Sligo Abbey and Markree Castle Chapel during the weekend of 1-2
November.
For you, only you is a collaborative project conceived by Sonia
Boyce, and features one of Britain’s finest early music
ensembles, Alamire, along with the contemporary sound artist
Mikhail
Karikis. The project takes as its starting point the
work of one of the great renaissance composers Josquin
Desprez.
Desprez’s piece Tu solus qui facis mirabilia (You alone
can do wonders) was written c. 1480s and has been cited as an
inspiration by many composers from the 16th century right up
to the present day.
For you, only you imagines a dialogue between two characters:
the voice of an old master as represented by Alamire, and a younger
troubled voice sung by Karikis. The piece begins with the younger
voice attempting to find a way to communicate with the master.
Frustrated at first, he coughs and splutters, but throughout
the piece the younger voice slowly comes together with that of
the master and the composition ends with the unity of both parties
in the lively repetition of a celebratory chorus.
Panel discussion
On Friday 31 Oct at 6.30pm there will be an
artists panel discussion with Sonia Boyce, David Skinner and
Mikhail Kerakis, chaired by Model Director/Curator Seamus Kealy.
This event is free of charge butit is advisable to reserve your

Opening hours
For you, only you at Castle House will be open to the
public between 10am - 5.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays and from 12noon

Sonia Boyce is an artist whose practice combines
a variety of media, and she regularly works with other artists
in improvisational collaborations. The audience is often a central
element in her works and through its involvement she examines
the way in which cultural differences can be mediated and articulated.
Mikhail

explores contemporary auditory culture and encompasses sound
art, drawing, performance and video installation. He has worked
with Bjork and DJ Spooky and his work has been shown at Tate
Modern and the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
Alamire is made up of some of Britain’s finest choral
performers. Under the direction of David Skinner they have taken
part in many media-based projects, including gallery installations
and sound tracks for film and television.
The Model is particularly delighted to work with Kevinsfort

kind facilitation of access to Castle
